Embracing Nature: The Dong Baek Wooden House

Situated in the Hyangrin Hill area of Yongin-si, Dong Baek Wooden House, designed by mlnp architects, stands as a testament to the fusion of traditional Korean architecture with modern design principles. Nestled within a residential enclave developed in the early days of Korea, the house overlooks a natural green expanse to the south, offering a serene backdrop for daily life.

Harmony of Material and Structure

Drawing inspiration from its natural surroundings, Dong Baek Wooden House embraces the inherent beauty of heavy timber structures. Exposed wooden beams and columns adorn the interior, serving both functional and aesthetic purposes. The exterior facade, predominantly clad in Akoya Wood, harmonizes with the surrounding landscape, while exposed concrete walls capture the essence of pine patterns, blurring the boundaries between inside and outside.

Spatial Delight: Form Follows Function

Internally, the house balances simplicity with complexity, employing double-decker spaces and sloped roofs to create dynamic spatial variations. A long wooden shade shields the interior from harsh summer sunlight, framing picturesque views and enhancing visual connectivity with the outdoors. Each floor is meticulously zoned to accommodate the lifestyle of a family of four, with thoughtful considerations for privacy and communal living.

A Tranquil Retreat: Connecting with Nature

The design incorporates a tea room adjacent to the dining area, featuring three-sided folding doors that blur the line between indoor and outdoor spaces. In summer, it transforms into an external terrace, inviting alfresco gatherings, while in winter, it seamlessly integrates with the family living area. Upstairs, three bedrooms offer sweeping southern views, complemented by strategically positioned bathrooms and void spaces to ensure privacy and tranquility.

A Testament to Timeless Craftsmanship

Dong Baek Wooden House epitomizes the enduring appeal of wood construction materials, seamlessly blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary sensibilities. From its serene interiors to its thoughtfully designed exteriors, the house embodies a sense of harmony with nature, inviting residents to embrace the ever-changing seasons and the passage of time.
