Harmony with Nature: Exploring the Hidden House
A Portrait of Life
Nestled amidst the serene beauty of Taitung, the Hidden House stands as a testament to the intimate connection between architecture and life. Over the span of several years, Yuan Architects collaborated closely with the homeowner to craft a dwelling that reflects the essence of family life. Situated amidst sprawling rice fields, with distant hills on one side and the vast ocean on the other, the building blends seamlessly with its natural surroundings, almost as if it were an extension of the earth itself.
Embracing Nature’s Canvas
The architectural design of the Hidden House is a celebration of nature’s grandeur. Its horizontal roof panels, gently curving downward, mirror the undulating contours of distant mountains, creating a harmonious interplay between the built environment and the expansive sky, mountains, and fields. Every corner of the house is bathed in natural light and caressed by the breeze, allowing life to unfold in rhythm with the elements.
A Spatial Symphony: Inner Court and Outer Court
Inspired by the traditional Taiwanese three-section compound, the building’s structure forms the Chinese character “回” (“return”), symbolizing the cyclical relationship between nature and architecture. The inner courtyard serves as a nexus where the mountains meet the sea, extending the living space into the outdoors. Here, public areas such as the living room, dining room, kitchen, and study coexist harmoniously with private spaces like bedrooms, all under the watchful gaze of sundial-like skylights.
Journey of Life: From Entrance to Living
Upon entering the Hidden House, one is greeted by a hallway that serves as a conduit between different spatial realms, offering glimpses into the ebb and flow of daily life. This rustic yet refined environment pays homage to the rugged beauty of Taitung’s landscape, inviting residents to embrace a minimalist lifestyle in tune with nature’s rhythms. Through this symbiotic relationship, the Hidden House evolves over time, embodying the warmth and comfort of a true home.
Conclusion: A Testament to Tranquility
In the Hidden House, Yuan Architects have succeeded in creating a sanctuary where architecture and nature intertwine seamlessly. From its humble beginnings as a farmhouse to its transformation into a modern-day retreat, this dwelling stands as a beacon of harmony, inviting inhabitants to immerse themselves in the timeless beauty of Taitung’s landscape.
