Rediscovering Tradition: Hécourt House
Embracing Rural Tranquility
Situated in the village of Hécourt, along the Eure Valley in Normandy, lies the Hécourt House—a former farmhouse transformed into a serene country retreat, merely an hour’s drive from Paris. The primary aspiration of the landowner was to fashion a space where family members and weary city dwellers could unwind amidst nature’s embrace—a sanctuary where one could reconnect with the earth. Studio Guma took on the challenge to merge modernity with rural simplicity, crafting an architectural marvel that resonates with both comfort and tranquility.
Preserving Heritage: A Blend of Past and Present
The existing structures comprised a long farmhouse and two small outbuildings, each bearing witness to the area’s rural history. Their millstone facades, wooden lintels, and red flat-tile roofs exuded warmth and authenticity, painting a picture of bygone days. Studio Guma’s vision was to honor these historical elements while infusing them with new life. With a gentle slope guiding the path to the entrance, the structures seamlessly integrated with the lush surroundings—beech trees, walnut trees, shrubs, and sprawling lawns.
Crafting Spatial Harmony
The project’s layout was deeply influenced by the existing elements, resulting in a spatial sequence that unfolded gracefully across the landscape. Bedrooms nestled in the lower terrain, preserving original features like walls, beams, and fireplaces while offering garden vistas through traditional vertical windows. Common areas were strategically divided, with the kitchen-dining space serving as the heart of communal activity, opening onto stone terraces and lush gardens, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor realms.
Inviting Serenity: From Stable to Sanctuary
The living room, once a humble stable, now exuded intimacy and warmth, centered around a crackling fireplace and framed by picturesque landscape views. Upstairs, a partially demolished wooden floor gave rise to a mezzanine, offering a cozy retreat for quiet contemplation. Concrete, steel, and lacquered aluminum were chosen as primary materials, their modern textures subtly complementing the rustic essence of the original structure, ensuring a seamless blend of tradition and contemporary design.
Conclusion: A Testament to Timelessness
In the transformation of Hécourt House, Studio Guma achieved a delicate balance between past and present, creating a haven where modern comforts intertwine with rural charm. Through thoughtful preservation and innovative design, the essence of this former farmhouse has been revitalized, offering a timeless retreat for generations to come.
