Fostering Diversity and Education AMN Student Housing
A Government Initiative
AMN student housing stands as a pioneering government pilot project in Surabaya, Indonesia, aimed at providing accommodation, training, and vocational education for university and polytechnic students hailing from diverse ethnicities and cultural backgrounds. With Indonesia boasting over 1340 ethnic groups dispersed across its islands, the project serves as a platform for students to experience pluralistic living, transcending their own ethnic boundaries.
Strategic Location and Collaboration
Conveniently situated between Surabaya’s old town and Juanda international airport, the 1-hectare site on Jl. Jemur Andayani offers easy access to over twenty universities in the city. Collaborating closely with the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, SHAU Indonesia spearheaded the planning and construction process, with detailed engineering drawings provided by PT Tisaga Konsultan.
Innovative Design Approach
SHAU Indonesia adopted a thoughtful design approach, dividing the housing into four terraced volumes with green roofs, elevated on stilts to create an open ground floor reminiscent of traditional houses. Facades facing East and West feature limited openings to mitigate overheating, with louvers installed for sunlight filtration. Automated irrigation systems utilizing harvested rainwater maintain green strips of plants on the facade, enhancing sustainability.
Comprehensive Facilities for Student Well-being
The student housing complex offers a plethora of learning and recreational amenities, including indoor and semi-outdoor study areas, a spacious auditorium for lectures and cultural performances, sports fields, language centers, libraries, counseling rooms, and religious facilities catering to diverse faiths. Moreover, a landscape dotted with productive gardens and participatory art corners fosters a sense of community and creativity among students.
Student-Centric Living Spaces
Comprising 180 rooms, each accommodating up to three students, the housing complex ensures inclusivity with wheelchair-accessible units on the ground floor and mentor units on the top floors. The design ethos prioritizes student comfort and homeliness, with seating arrangements following the Indonesian concept of lesehan, promoting relaxed gatherings and study sessions.
Cultivating a Resort-like Environment
Emphasizing a holistic student experience, the housing complex incorporates elements of resort living, encouraging students to unwind and feel at home amidst their academic pursuits. From productive gardens to art corners, every aspect of the design aims to create a friendly and nurturing environment for student growth and well-being.
In essence, AMN student housing emerges not only as a residential facility but also as a vibrant educational ecosystem, fostering diversity, inclusivity, and student-centric learning experiences in Surabaya’s educational landscape.
