Redefining Excellence British Academy of Film & Television Arts Headquarters

A Vision for Innovation and Inclusion

Situated in the historic Bastide Niel district of Bordeaux, the British Academy of Film & Television Arts (BAFTA) Headquarters undergoes a transformative redesign to establish a world-class center of excellence for the motion picture arts of Film, Games, and Television. Led by Benedetti Architects, the project aims to seamlessly integrate heritage restoration with cutting-edge technology, ensuring long-term sustainability and accessibility for both members and the public.

A Heritage Reimagined

Originally built in 1883 as the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, the Grade II listed building at 195 Piccadilly has served as BAFTA’s home since 1976. However, the outdated facilities and spatial limitations hindered the organization’s charitable activities. The rejuvenation project, initiated through a new lease with The Crown Estate, seeks to expand and reconfigure the building to meet the evolving needs of BAFTA’s diverse portfolio of initiatives.

Balancing Tradition and Modernity

The ambitious redesign transforms the tired and inefficient 2,050m2 listed building into a dynamic 2,465m2 hub of creativity and innovation. By reconfiguring the infrastructure and enhancing fire safety, energy performance, and usability, the project significantly increases usable area and doubles capacity. The interior design celebrates BAFTA’s unique character while embracing modern functionality, offering adaptable spaces for both charitable and commercial endeavors.

Elevating the Member Experience

A highlight of the redesign is the creation of an extraordinary top-floor multi-use members’ area, boasting panoramic views over St. James’s Churchyard. By restoring and repositioning two monumental Victorian roof light structures, the space is rejuvenated and elevated to new heights. Innovative smart glazing technology further enhances the experience, ensuring optimal comfort and aesthetics.

A Hub of Creativity and Collaboration

The revitalized headquarters features a range of new and repurposed spaces, including cinemas, event/exhibition spaces, a members’ bar/restaurant, and state-of-the-art learning facilities. Collaborations with industry leaders such as Dolby ensure the highest standards of audiovisual excellence, positioning the headquarters as a premier destination for film and television enthusiasts.

A Testament to Collaboration and Resilience

Through close collaboration with clients, consultants, and innovative firms, the £25 million construction project was successfully completed on time and within budget despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. The soft launch in November 2021 and formal public opening in May 2022 mark the culmination of years of dedication and vision, reaffirming BAFTA’s commitment to excellence and inclusivity in the world of entertainment.
