Redesigning Market Space Gavere A Multifunctional Approach
The Former Parking Lot
The Market in Gavere was once predominantly used as a parking lot. The pavement was in poor condition, offering little space for pedestrians to gather or linger, with only a narrow sidewalk along the facades.
Transformation Process
In redesigning public spaces like the Market, it’s crucial to strike a balance between various needs and activities. The new Market space aims to be flexible, accommodating weekly markets, fairs, terraces, greenery, parking areas, loading zones, and recreational activities.
Participatory Approach
Creating a plan for such a space involves extensive community engagement. Residents, traders, and stakeholders participated in workshops, design sessions, and information markets to ensure their voices were heard.
Green Concept
The redesigned Market incorporates a sophisticated green concept, going beyond mere flower beds. It features a diverse range of perennial plants, ornamental grasses, flower bulbs, shrubs, and trees. This not only enhances the visual appeal but also supports biodiversity, providing habitat and sustenance for butterflies, bees, and other insects throughout the year. The design also addresses rainwater management, with extensive greenery serving as buffers and infiltration zones.
Sustainable Materials
The uncomfortable and varied pavement of the past has been replaced with a durable and comfortable square floor made of European granite. This material ensures longevity and ease of maintenance while providing a safe and pleasant walking surface.
Space for Community Engagement
A portion of the square has been designated car-free, thanks to a new parking system in the town center. This area features a multifunctional space with an integrated water feature supplied by fresh spring water. The fountain not only adds aesthetic value but also serves as a gathering place for social interactions and recreational activities, promoting a vibrant community life.
The redesign of Market Space Gavere represents a holistic approach to urban planning, incorporating sustainability, community engagement, and multifunctionality to create a dynamic and welcoming public space for residents and visitors alike.
