Rediscovering Urban Spaces The Transformation of Helmut-Zilk-Park
A New City Oasis
Helmut-Zilk-Park, situated on former railroad tracks, emerges as a serene urban retreat amidst the bustling streets of the 10th district. Embracing the concept of repurposing urban spaces, the park features a central meadow clearing surrounded by a grove of flowering trees, complemented by playgrounds, tenant gardens, and a sun deck with a café.
Redefining Urban Landscapes
The evolution of the 10th district prompted a reimagining of the urban fabric, presenting an opportunity to redefine the Stadtfeld bridging the inner and outer districts. Guided by the theme “From Station to City,” Helmut-Zilk-Park represents a transformation of former railroad tracks into a vibrant city park, drawing inspiration from traditional people’s parks while introducing modern elements.
Harmonious Design Elements
At the heart of our design lies a central, open lawn surrounded by a ring of flowering trees. This juxtaposition of open space and lush foliage creates a harmonious balance within the park. The small-crowned trees not only offer shade and seclusion but also preserve scenic views from nearby apartments. A network of pathways provides seamless connectivity to the surrounding cityscape, enhancing accessibility and integration.
Community Engagement and Biodiversity
The park features a sun terrace, housing a café that serves as a focal point for neighborhood gatherings. Community gardens located at the southeast entrance offer residents a space for cultivation and social interaction. Furthermore, the incorporation of near-natural border areas fosters a diverse urban biotope, supporting various plant and animal species. Different lawn and meadow communities contribute to biodiversity while enhancing rainwater infiltration and creating habitats for local wildlife.
A Thriving Urban Ecosystem
In its inaugural year, Helmut-Zilk-Park has already become a thriving ecosystem, attracting insects, small animals, and avian species. The park stands as a testament to the successful transformation of urban landscapes, offering residents and visitors alike a tranquil haven amidst the city’s hustle and bustle.
Through thoughtful design and community engagement, Helmut-Zilk-Park exemplifies the potential of repurposed urban spaces to foster biodiversity, connectivity, and social cohesion within modern cities.
