Renovation of Kossuth Square – Kispest A Comprehensive Revamp
District Municipality’s Ambitious Plan
The XIX district of Budapest, Kispest Municipality, embarked on an ambitious endeavor to revitalize its public spaces. The District Municipality initiated a tender proposal aimed at renovating the areas surrounding the Kispest Kossuth Square market and the Trefort High School Square. The overarching goal of this initiative is to rejuvenate public spaces, streets, and associated structures in an environmentally sustainable manner.
Kossuth Square: An Urban Oasis
Kossuth Square in Kispest serves as a vibrant urban oasis, blurring the boundaries between community, recreation, and environmental consciousness. At the heart of this square, a sports facility takes center stage, acting as a hub for physical activity and wellness. Adjacent to it, the “Sitting Terrace” unfolds, resembling a sculptural piece that encourages residents to connect, unwind, and engage with the space.
Versatile Features for All Ages
The design of Kossuth Square incorporates versatile features catering to individuals of all ages. Chess tables and a ping-pong table invite playful competition and intellectual stimulation. A Street Sports Zone offers opportunities for strengthening exercises favored by the youth. For those seeking a meditative escape, the art of Slacklining provides a tranquil, balance-focused sport. Anchoring points for beginners’ practice sessions are integrated into the design.
Innovative Parking Solutions
Underneath the sports field, a 12-space parking area has been built, seamlessly connected to a pedestrian zone. The Sitting Terrace, crafted from smooth concrete, offers a multifunctional space for conversations, relaxation, and play. Trees integrated into the sitting area add an organic touch, while a Plant Runner Grid planted with lush creepers creates a harmonious composition. Streetball backboards provide opportunities for sports activities.
Optimized Utilization and Greenery
The design optimizes parking lot usage, restricting vehicular access only on market days. Folding bollards allow for car-free days, enhancing the square’s versatility. Increased tree cover throughout the square, especially in the parking lot, transforms the area and aids drainage. Green lanes separate parking spaces, housing trees and contributing to water management. Amenities such as grass, shrubs, and perennial plants enrich the green spaces.
Envisioning a Renewed Urban Gem
The landscape architecture concept envisions a renewed square that transcends traditional expectations, providing a dynamic, inclusive, and environmentally responsible urban space for all to cherish and enjoy. The comprehensive revamp of Kossuth Square – Kispest stands as a testament to the district’s commitment to sustainable urban development and community well-being.
