Transforming Gleispark Frintrop A Tale of Industrial Revival
Industrial Heritage Transformed
Gleispark Frintrop, once a bustling railway freight station and marshalling yard, underwent a remarkable transformation over the years. Stretching over approximately 30 hectares, the site was once dominated by railway tracks, adorned with rich and valuable ruderal vegetation. However, with the decline of industrial activity in the 1960s, the area faced a new destiny.
Preservation and Development
Landscape architects at DTP devised a management concept aimed at preserving the site’s exceptional landscape and species-rich vegetation while enhancing the contrast between wooded areas and open pastures. This vision paved the way for Gleispark Frintrop to evolve into a green oasis, boasting remarkable biodiversity, climate resilience, and a crucial balancing function within the urban landscape.
The Evolution into a Park
The transformation of Gleispark Frintrop into a park was marked by deliberate design decisions, including the establishment of a comprehensive network of paths spanning two kilometers. Symbolic entrances at various points connect the park to surrounding urban districts, inviting visitors to explore its verdant expanse. Architectural features such as steel grating towers and follies serve as focal points, offering panoramic views and immersive experiences.
Embracing Nature and Heritage
The park’s landscape features a variety of elements, including the iconic “Drehberg,” a hill constructed from excavated material, serving as a prominent gathering spot. Additionally, the incorporation of an old railway tunnel, repurposed as a pathway, adds historical depth and accessibility to the park, catering to diverse community needs.
A Testament to Success
Since its inception in 2000, Gleispark Frintrop has continued to expand, integrating new elements while preserving its park-like ambiance. The site’s biodiversity flourishes, attracting visitors who engage with the space in myriad ways. More than two decades later, Gleispark Frintrop stands as a testament to successful industrial revitalization, earning its reputation as a “green place of happiness” within the Ruhr Metropolis.
