Preserving Industrial Heritage: The ark38 Renovation Project
Aalst, historically renowned for its textile industry along the Dender River, boasts a rich industrial heritage. One such relic of its golden era stands tall along the Pierre Corneliskaai – a former weaving mill, later repurposed as a plastic factory under Tupperware’s banner. Today, it undergoes a transformation into a showroom for designer furniture, courtesy of Sterck NV, specializing in bathroom and kitchen furnishings.
Honoring Industrial Roots
The renovation of this historic edifice prioritized the preservation of its industrial essence. Characterized by its distinctive brick architecture and symmetrical bays, the building exudes a timeless charm. While not officially listed as a protected site, its architectural significance warranted meticulous restoration. Specialized cleaning techniques were employed to restore the exterior to its former glory, paying homage to the city’s industrial legacy.
Architectural Adaptations for Modern Functionality
To repurpose the structure into a furniture showroom, significant architectural interventions were necessary. The spacious interior was subdivided using raw materials – concrete, metal, and wood – to maintain an open yet functional layout. Concrete discs, supported by architectural pillars, delineate spaces and provide display surfaces for furniture. Metal volumes at the rear house ancillary functions, while a wooden floor adds warmth and character to the space.
Harmonizing Indoor and Outdoor Spaces
A pivotal aspect of the renovation is the integration of outdoor elements within the showroom. A spacious patio within the original warehouse boundaries serves as a transitional space, allowing for natural light and greenery. Climbing plants adorn the patio, creating a verdant oasis and a unique backdrop for outdoor furniture displays. Additionally, an additional wooden floor enhances the spatial experience, ensuring continuity and flow throughout the showroom.
Balancing Heritage with Modernity
Throughout the renovation, a delicate balance was struck between preserving the building’s industrial heritage and accommodating modern functionalities. The architectural language and interior design choices echo the site’s historical significance while ensuring relevance to contemporary needs. The result is a harmonious blend of past and present, offering visitors a unique and immersive experience amidst Aalst’s industrial legacy.
