Redefining Michelin’s Headquarters: Canopy Michelin Reception Area
A Historic Site Reimagined
Situated on the Carmes site of Clermont-Ferrand since its establishment in the late 19th century, Michelin’s Canopy has evolved into the company’s headquarters. Completed in 2021, the project, a collaboration between Encore Heureux Architectes, Construire, and Base, seeks to represent the group’s identity in a welcoming, cohesive space while integrating with the surrounding public square.
A New Identity
The project extends the current headquarters over two levels, with a dynamic new façade that honors its historic structure. Serving as both a reception area and the main entrance, it bridges the gap between private company spaces and the public square, renovated as part of a joint effort between the city and Michelin Group.
A Multi-Faceted Program
Addressing the challenge of connecting diverse spaces to accommodate daily visitors, the project preserves and integrates the tropical glasshouse initiated by Edouard Michelin. The plaza, adorned with greenery and water features, now offers public access and hosts exhibition spaces, a store, museum, and Café Equateur, fostering community engagement.
Contemporary Design Challenges
The Canopy’s design prioritizes transparency and sustainability, featuring a vast glass façade shaded by wooden awnings. Curved architectural elements reflect Michelin’s tire design, while sustainable materials and local construction companies minimize the carbon footprint without compromising industrial aesthetics.
Shared Values and Innovation
Encore Heureux and Construire agencies, embodying values of quality and innovation, collaborated closely with Michelin to realize the project. The Canopy stands as a testament to sustainable mobility challenges, symbolizing the enduring connection between Michelin and Clermont-Ferrand.
By blending historic significance with contemporary design and sustainability, the Canopy Michelin Reception Area redefines Michelin’s headquarters as a symbol of innovation and environmental stewardship.
