Crafting Harmony: The Music Pavilion in Winterthur

Atelier Void, in collaboration with architect Lorenz Bachmann, embarked on a unique project to create a dedicated space for music in the picturesque Swiss town of Winterthur. Commissioned by a pianist seeking a serene yet enchanting environment for practice and teaching, the single-story music pavilion seamlessly integrates with the surrounding garden landscape, embodying tranquility and magic.

Architectural Design

The music pavilion rests on a simple concrete base, with both walls and the pitched roof crafted from 12cm thick cross-laminated timber panels, reminiscent of a delicate cardboard model. The steep gable roof extends gracefully from the walls, creating an open-air ambiance that connects the interior space with the garden. Adorned in thick cement fiber boards shimmering in 21 shades of blue, the facade adds a touch of elegance and vibrancy to the structure.

Functional Elegance

Concealed within the thickness of the gabled facade, a service room layer houses an entrance, toilet, and storage space, ensuring the pavilion’s independence from the main residential building. Inside, the music room exudes simplicity, with white wooden and textile surfaces reflecting the natural light streaming in from the garden. The high gable roof provides ample volume for sound to resonate while offering musicians a sense of shelter and intimacy.

Acoustic Excellence

The music pavilion’s exceptional acoustics are achieved through sound-permeable fabric walls and ceilings, layered with absorbing and reflecting elements. This meticulous attention to acoustical design ensures that the space enhances the richness and clarity of musical performances.

Embracing Community

Inspired to share the beauty of music and architecture, the pianist initiated the “Pavillon Bleu” concert series, inviting others to experience the harmonious fusion of sound and space. The music pavilion stands not only as a testament to architectural craftsmanship but also as a symbol of artistic expression and community engagement.

Crafted with precision and passion, the music pavilion in Winterthur embodies the timeless allure of music, seamlessly blending architectural elegance with acoustic excellence.
