Revitalizing Gaobei Community: A Renewed Public Space
In the bustling city of Chengdu, China, the Gaobei Community Neighborhood Center stands as a testament to transformation and community engagement. Led by LEL Design Studio, the renovation project breathed new life into a neglected site, formerly occupied by a real estate sales office, abandoned for nearly a decade.
Vision and Planning
The project aimed to create a vibrant community hub that resonates with the daily lives of residents. Through meticulous planning and collaboration, the team envisioned a space that fosters a sense of belonging and openness. Detailed surveys of the urban surroundings paved the way for a neighborhood center tailored to the specific needs of the community.
Concept and Design
Divided into two distinct areas, the revitalized center embodies the concept of a “forest green island” and a “community living room.” The latter serves as a core public space, affectionately referred to as the “Gaobei Living Room” by locals. Surrounded by lush greenery, it hosts a myriad of community activities, from performances to sports events, fostering a vibrant atmosphere of camaraderie.
Green Oasis: Forest Green Island
The Forest Green Island reimagines abandoned model houses, integrating community commerce and essential services. With a focus on environmental sustainability, the project retained existing trees, enhancing the natural landscape. This verdant oasis provides residents with green and healthy activity spaces, promoting overall well-being.
Service Center Integration
Anticipating future needs, the design incorporates a service center within the forested area. Facade renovations prioritize light introduction and interface transparency, enhancing connectivity with the community living room. This thoughtful integration ensures seamless access to essential services while maintaining harmony with the surroundings.
