Transforming History: The Rehabilitation of Passeig de Gràcia 125-127
In the heart of Barcelona stands a residential building, originally constructed in 1901 by architect Leandre Serrallach i Mas. Over the years, it has become a symbol of the city’s architectural heritage, embodying a blend of history and modernity.
Collaborative Rehabilitation Efforts
Between 2016 and 2019, a collaborative effort between the technical team of Núñez i Navarro and the architecture firm OAB undertook the restoration and rehabilitation of Passeig de Gràcia 125-127. Their mission: to preserve the building’s historical significance while adapting it to contemporary needs.
Balancing Tradition and Innovation
The primary challenge of the project was to seamlessly integrate history with modernity along one of Barcelona’s most iconic streets. This involved not only restoring the buildings but also reimagining their use for present-day requirements.
Unifying Two Buildings into One
A key aspect of the rehabilitation was the fusion of two adjacent buildings into a cohesive whole. By emptying the central bay between the load-bearing walls of both houses, a new space was created to organize courtyards, installations, and vertical communication across different floors.
Creating Harmonious Spaces
The rehabilitation project aimed to harmonize the interior spaces while maintaining the integrity of the original facades. Through careful design and planning, the architects achieved an optical illusion of unity, presenting a singular facade to both Passeig de Gràcia and Riera de Sant Miquel street.
Innovative Design Solutions
To address the challenges of modern living, new courtyards, staircases, and elevator cores were strategically placed within the building. These additions not only enhanced functionality but also met contemporary accessibility standards without compromising the building’s historical character.
Preserving Heritage for the Future
The rehabilitation of Passeig de Gràcia 125-127 stands as a testament to the importance of preserving architectural heritage while embracing the evolving needs of society. By marrying tradition with innovation, the project ensures that this historic building continues to contribute to Barcelona’s rich cultural tapestry for generations to come.
